IT'S THE FINAL COUNTDOWN! Here are my Top 6 Most Anticipated Films for 2017, if you want to see what else made the list early on here's Part 1 (#21 - 14) and Part 2 (#13 - 7)!
Until then here's Part 3 of 3:
(#6 - #1)
6. SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING -
The Spider-Man character introduced in Civil War performed by Tom Holland was nothing short of being freaking awesome. I love how different this Spider-Man film looks and feels compared to others in the past. This seems more like the coming of age John Hughes story as others described it. I like the fact that this film is about Peter Parker dealing with his life as Spider-Man as he goes through high school and faces the challenges of being a teenager. I also love that we have Michael Keaton in the role of the Vulture. It will be interesting to see how he takes on this villain role. Of course there’s the man of the hour Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man serving as Peter’s role model. Seeing the back of forth between Tony and Peter will be hilarious including the high school hijinx with Peter’s pal Ned Leeds played by Jacob Batalon. A different take on Spider-Man is just awesome in so many ways and a fresh take on the character is what the Marvel franchise needs.
5. BABY DRIVER -
Edgar Wright is no doubt one of the best directors working today and one of my top 5 favorite directors of all time. I loved every film he’s directed from Shaun of the Dead to The World’s End! I even loved his show from the late 90s called Spaced that also starred Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. This time around this will not be one to star Simon Pegg and Nick Frost like films in The Cornetto Trilogy, but a heist film starring younger actors Ansel Elgort and Lily James, but also great talents like Jamie Foxx, Jon Hamm and Kevin Spacey. I love the direction Wright takes with his films with creative camera work and quick cut editing. He has an incredibly unique and fast paced style, which I think he’ll succeed extraordinarily well directing this heist picture.
4. WAR FOR THE PLANET OF APES -
I’ve been an absolutely huge fan of the rebooted Planet of the Apes series with Rise of the Planet of the Apes being big surprise in summer 2011. Then in summer 2014, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes comes along and is even better than the first, not often one can say that. The tone of that film was so grounded and intense that you wouldn’t think the stakes could get any higher. Well by the looks of it War for the Planet of the Apes looks even better than the last, which might seem rare because third films in the franchise tend to not even be as good as the second. I truly think that this film will break that mold and perhaps be the best Apes film not just in this rebooted franchise, but of the original franchise as well. It looks as though more will happen with our head ape Caesar, always played brilliantly by Andy Serkis, and his band of apes as they face off in an all out war against the human race. There’s no doubt this will be the darkest of this franchise considering it’ll pave way to the events of the original film from 1968. This looks to be another riveting entry in the Apes franchise that will hit on every emotional level.
3. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 -
I’ll be proud to say that my favorite Marvel Cinematic Universe film still remains to be Guardians of the Galaxy, so it’s no question that I am pumped out of my mind to see another adventure with the galaxy’s most lovable band of A-holes. I’ve watched the last full trailer an absurd amount of times, but it’s all worth it because I know I’m in for just another blast of entertainment with great, lovable characters, gut busting laughs, and spectacular visual effects and action sequences. I can’t wait to see all my favorite characters return being Star Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket Raccoon, Yondu, Nebula and of course Baby Groot, all of whom I’m sure will all have their moments to shine. The last couple trailers are a safe reminder that this movie will be executed the same way as the first film I adore and include excellent visual directing by James Gunn. He can really make a great looking film, but aside from that I’m sure the adventure I’m in for will make me sing to the high heavens with how satisfied I’ll be with this film. I don’t find it the least bit convincing this film will be a let down.
2. DUNKIRK -
Christopher Nolan is another one of my favorite directors of all time, in fact he’s in my top 2 just behind Mr. Steven Spielberg. Yeah, I think he’s that good and boy from those trailers do I think Dunkirk looks like another excellent effort from Mr. Nolan. Right off the bat I love that he’s taking on another genre in a war film and not something sci-fi, crime or noir oriented, but something intense we hadn’t seen him do before. He’s great at every genre he’s accomplished, but judging from the trailers I’ve seen and even in the IMAX prologue, the level of intensity he executes in this film is so perfect for the war that he’s depicting on screen. With a brilliant cast lined up in Kenneth Branagh, Tom Hardy (from the above image), Cillian Murphy, and Mark Rylance you know that it’s all star talent. There’s also the inclusion of Harry Styles from One Direction making his acting debut and for a Nolan film I’m all for it because he’s able to take actors that people had less faith in, the late Heath Ledger comes to mind, and bring an excellent performance out of them. I’m more than sure that’ll be the case with Styles. Aside from that the filmmaking looks brilliant and the execution feels genuine. I couldn’t be more excited for a film helmed by a filmmaker who has a heart for the art of cinema and I’m more than positive it will show in this film.
And now Finally My Most Anticipated Film of 2017 is…
Yes folks! Anybody who’s ever known me knows how much I love STAR WARS! This franchise has inspired me so much over the years in regards to expressing my passion for film, so it was no question I was excited to see new Star Wars movies with the Disney/Lucasfilm partnership. I really enjoyed this past year’s ROGUE ONE and I was an even bigger fan of 2015's The Force Awakens and as soon as that film ended I knew I wanted more from this story and more of these characters. Gladly enough 2017 sees the release to the continuation of this story as the second chapter in this Sequel Trilogy where we’ll hopefully figure out the truth behind who Rey’s parents are and who the mysterious Supreme Leader Snoke really is. I look forward to seeing this new cast return with Daisy Ridley, who absolutely killed it as Rey, John Boyega as the lovable, energetic Finn, Oscar Isaac as the charming Resistance pilot Poe Dameron and Adam Driver as the villainous Kylo Ren. Also, older faces with Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, the master Jedi that will finally teach Rey the ways of the Force and the late Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa. Rest in peace. I cannot wait to see what director Rian Johnson has in store for the next chapter in this saga and to see the dynamic between all of these characters expand more and more. I absolutely love how they’re going to handle this franchise now even with there being new Canon material in TV, comics, video games and novels. To see how these new movies can further the story, characters, and universe to complement the past films we love and adding to the lore in the new Canon is a fanboy's dream come true.
Well guys, that was extremely fun to gush about the films that I’m most excited for coming out in 2017! It’s finally upon us and it looks like we’ll all have a good time when going to the movies! Personally I think it’ll be a year to remember and even if the films I mentioned aren’t the greatest, there will at least be memorable times to experience at the theater. Until then thank you all for reading and be sure check back on my Best and Worst of 2016 lists coming very soon. My Worst of 2016 List will be posted within the next couple days. Thank you all for reading and hope it's been a great start for you for the new year!!
